She abandoned the nest, I think. She wouldn't have done it without good reason.
Hopefully she's still alive, and lays the rest of the eggs possible for a Chipping Sparrow.
Pretty sure cold weather killed three eggs. One disappeared around the same time as the mother did.
Nature abhors a vacuum, any opportunity will be jumped upon...not that I'm suggesting this snail can jump.
She wouldn't have permitted a snail to prey on her babies either.
I removed the snail, took some pictures, including this one of the nest, eggs and snail on some creeping phlox, and put them back where they were, in the spruce tree.
Can't do it....can't just throw them away, though I'm pretty certain they're dead...she wouldn't have left them unattended.
